Girl Bros Radio, Something Old/Something New, and Largo!

GIRL BROS RADIO

Girl Bros Radio airs again tonight, July 17th, at 9pm PST (Click here to see when the show will air in your area: Time and Date) on luxuriamusic.com! This go around, DJ Wendy will be controlling the mic and spinning the tunes. There has never been a Girl Bros airing that I did not enjoy! Wendy always plays great (and a good variety of) music and the chat often gets pretty crazy! In addition, Wendy's "partner in crime", Lisa, will be chatting with us! Please stop by and enjoy the good music and crazy conversations!

Please note that luxuriamusic.com has recently made improvements to the chat and website. If you have not already set-up an account, please do so prior to the show (to be on the really safe side, give yourself 30 minutes) so that you can sign-in and join the chat when the show begins. It may be a good idea to log-in to the chat, prior to the show, even if you have already set-up an account.

SOMETHING OLD/SOMETHING NEW

Wendy & Lisa have a newly released incredibly funky track on their website! The track comes from the Town and Country Club (London) performance in 1989! The track is titled ‘Oh Wow’ and lives up to its name! You can check it out by clicking on the 'OH WOW' button below or by checking out the Wendy & Lisa Offical Website: Free MP3 of OH WOW (Note: In order to successfully download the track, you will have to provide a VALID e-mail address).

OH WOW!

Wendy & Lisa - near the Pacific, but not Pacifico - Jan 25

If you are in Wendy & Lisa's fan base, you are probably Far Too Famous to read lil' ol' Katrina. But if you're not, it's never too late.

Therefore, take note that Wendy & Lisa's residency at Largo Los Angeles is being continued into 2006. The new shows are duo-only, their temporary autonomous supergroup Pacifico (with folks like Mike Elizondo, Jr. and Doyle Bramhall II, and guests Eric Clapton and Nikka Costa et al.) having scattered to the winds of individual responsibility. But with the duo's dual responsibility in LA, they get to carry on the fun.

If you're in the LA area (or, if you're crazy like me and will fly in from Austin for these things), this intimate venue is the right place to check a group out. Largo is one of those places where the atmosphere is homey and -- like a home -- it incubates the unexpected.

If you're looking for Prince-like music, you are likely to be disappointed. Sorry. Since breaking the tethers of Columbia Records in the late 80s, Wendy & Lisa have gone fairly far afield into their own sound, a kind of singer songwriter meets alternative meets jazz piano with extra notes thrown into the chords. 1990's Eroica presaged the next several years of female alternapop, sounding like Sheryl Crow, the Indigo Girls, and Alannah Myles about two years before those artists or anyone sounding like that had ever hit radio. Mainstream media on this side of the pond didn't notice, but folks like k. d. lang and Michael Penn did, coming along for the ride. Since, the two have been mostly musician's musicians, which becomes obvious the minute you enter any venue in which they play.

The last show I atteneded at Largo was crowded with "close personal friends" from the biz (some of whom, like Eric Clapton, jumped up on stage to jam), and a few lil' folks like myself. So, if you want to know what Wendy & Lisa sound like, you probably already do, even though you've never heard Eroica or Girl Bros. Think early Seal (that's them), Neil Finn (yep), Sheryl Crow's "My Favorite Mistake" (okay, that's just one of them), Eric Clapton's Reptile or Riding with the King (oh, hi there again), and dozens of lesser known artists they songwrite and work with. If you're an Austin person, think Doyle Bramhall II's post-Arc Angels career.

Just do Miss Katrina a favor, and don't listen to any of the tracks on the "Wendy & Lisa" page on MySpace. I'm not sure who selected those, but they're ancient, "the label says we have to sound like Prince to keep our contract" nonsense. Better ignored, really. Oh, yeah - and do go see them at Largo if you're near LA, or just crazy like me. Wednesday, January 25 is the next show. The eve of Wendy's birthday, I can only imagine the surprises up this time.

Pacifico - mini-review

Musically thinking, I think I can die happy now.

A full review has already been promised once I've returned to my regularly scheduled life. [If I ever wrote it, I never posted it. - Ed.]

Let me just say for now:

  • If I'd just been to see Wendy & Lisa and crew live for the first time in seven years with my fabulous and amazing girlfriend - that would have been enough.
  • Sitting absolute front and center at a table a couple of feet from the tiny stage? (And my sweet love making sure I had the best Lisa seat?) That would have been enough.
  • And if I'd just seen the bit where Nikki Costa did lead vocals on their cover of the Beatles' "Yer Blues," that would have been enough.
  • Seeing Cole back on stage singing backing doo wop vocals with Susannah for the first time in probably 15 years (albeit roughly) - that would have been enough.
  • And knowing that I was in the same very small club with that purple guy also watching them (even if he didn't accept the invitation to come onstage and play)? Lots of enoughness there, too.

All pretty cool stuff. But that 20 minutes where the guitar god himself came up on stage and we were less than six feet away from the stage when Eric Clapton, Doyle Bramhall II and Wendy Melvoin were trading guitar licks and admiring solos on "Trying to Keep it Real (Compared to What?)" That piece out of time where Eric admired Doyle as much as Wendy clearly idolized Eric and we all just fell out of time into the perfect musical nirvana of a seamless jam?

Yes, that.

Musically speaking, I really can die happy now. As Susannah said - you know, this is what it's all about - just a few friends and family getting together to play some music. No big deal. That said - Prince is lucky he declined the offer to get on stage to play "Raspberry Beret". I'm every bit serious when I say even he, even with them, couldn't possibly have followed that . . .

What's up with January 30?

A few fans have asked what's up with Wendy's cryptic comment about January 30. As captured on video by Lisa and posted at http://www.wendyandlisa.com/, Wendy asks "Would everybody [addressing those in the Family Jamm rehearsal] be into doing that? Can everyone kind of, just, in their mind's eye, look at January 30 in their minds and see whether or not they'd be into doing it? And then we'll try to get more people, like, interested in the, uh, the hit factor of that . . . "

See the 'rehears-o-pan' on the video section of wendyandlisa.com to see for yourselves. We'll work on getting more information (preferably with fewer pronouns and more nouns . . . )

Year in Review - 2003

Contributed by JedisonPi
On the Small Screen

2003 proved to be a banner year for Wendy & Lisa in more than one way. They continue to score NBC's Crossing Jordan, for which they won another ASCAP award. The ASCAP award honors composers who have written themes and or underscores for the highest rated series during Jan 1st-Dec 31st, 2002. Crossing Jordan will return in March 2004, after a year-long hiatus while its star Jill Hennesey gave birth to her first child in 2003.

Also high on the to do list is their continuing involvement with HBO's Carnivale (Sundays). Set in the 1930's, this 12-part series follows a traveling carnival across the dust bowl. HBO has recently requested more episodes, so looks like the girls may have another steady gig to count on.

On the Movie Front

During 2002/2003 we saw the release of such movies as Juwanna Mann and The Third Wheel. Neither were commercial successes, but none the less were scored by Wendy & Lisa. Look for Juwanna Mann at a rental store near you.

Prince Charming was a made for TV movie that had the honors of being scored by Wendy & Lisa. The movie premiered on TNT for all those interested.

Next up for Wendy is the movie Cavedweller with Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon. It's an adaptation from the book of the same name by Dorothy Allison. Word is that filming is set to start in July 2004 in Toronto with Wendy's "friend" Lisa Cholodenko (High Art, Laurel Canyon) directing. Can't wait to hear the music being composed for that movie. . . .

And on Stage!

Last but certainly not least, the end of 2003 saw what many Wendy & Lisa fans have been awaiting patiently for almost 20 years -- the reunion of The Revolution. On Dec 13 2003, Sheila E and her Lil Angel Bunny Foundation, produced an all-star fund raiser to help build what will be known as the Compassion Care Center. The line up included such artists as Sheila E, Patti Labelle, Members of The Time, Apollonia, The Family, Chaka Kahn, Jill Jones, Miko Weaver, various members of Sheila E's bands and of course The Revolution.

This night marked the first time in almost 20 years that the original members of The Revolution have played together. Commanding the stage like the guiding light that she is, Wendy lead the Revolution in "Mountains", "Anotherloverholeinyohead", "Purple Rain", "America", "Pop Life", "Raspberry Beret" and then "Baby I'm a Star" as the finale. The Revolution kicked ass as only they could -- from Lisa back in her 'apartment' to Bobby Z doing his thing with the kick-drum. This girl thought she was back in the 80's watching the Purple Rain tour, only this time I was front and center and it didn't smell like pot. Oh the joys of adulthood!! Honestly though, I think they all have never sounded better. According to Bobby, most of it was due to Wendy. He gave her all the credit for them sounding so good and for getting them all together. He beamed as he spoke of her. I was able to take some pictures from the show that will be posted as soon as possible. It was truly a night to remember.

A Few Associate Outings
added by Katrina Alliasan

As if 2003 didn't keep Wendy & Lisa busy enough, 2003 also saw the release of several albums with Wendy guest contributions, including Liz Phair's self titled 4th album, and Lisa Germano's Lullaby for a Liquid Pig.

Neil Finn Concert with Wendy & Lisa

Prince.org currently has a fan review of a recent performance down under by Neil Finn. Finn was joined by Wendy & Lisa, who are currently contributing studio work to an upcoming Finn album. In addition to backing Finn on his own work, the duo played a few songs of their own, including "Mother of Pearl," "I Will," and what seem to be additional tracks from the Girl Bros. album.

Finn also hinted about possible upcoming performances, so New Zealander readers should keep their ears perked up for more.

Bramhall, Jeff Beck in Vegas

Bramhall played a short but intense set at Las Vegas' House of Blues on Saturday, Sept. 25, opening for Jeff Beck. The band included Wendy Melvoin on bass, Lisa Coleman on organ, and Susannah Melvoin on percussion, using their skills to showcase lead man Doyle Bramhall II's guitar lines. All three contributed backing vocals as well, with Susannah taking on most of the vocal work. Look for a full review of the show at Musiczone soon.

Wendy & Lisa concert dates

Wendy & Lisa are planning some Los Angeles concert dates October. The shows are tentatively slated to be at the Largo in mid-October, but are as yet unconfimed. This will be Wendy & Lisa showcasing material from their Girl Bros. album, coinciding with its American re-release. As soon as we have confirmed dates, you'll see them here!

Bramhall mention in Dallas Morning News

A Dallas Morning News review of Doyle Bramhall II's recent tour opener there gives wonderful press to band members Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman. The Sept 15 review gives props to Wendy & Lisa lending some "big-time talent onstage," and is very favorable overall regarding the entire band and set.
